The 2017 winning piece for The Lifted Brow and non/fiction Lab Prize for Experimental Non-fiction is ‘An Architecture of Early Motherhood (and Independence)’ by Stephanie Guest and Kate Riggs.

The piece is described as a ‘powerful essay about female selfhood in public and private spaces, and is particularly an analysis of early motherhood—looking at different generations, employment, family structures and what all this means’.

Now in its third year, the prize encourages non-fiction writers to challenge themselves by testing the limits of their crafts and creativity. The winners receive $5000 and their essay will appear in The Lifted Brow #35.
