Embrace your inner teen and write for young adults.
This 6-hour workshop will show you how to develop compelling and complex teen characters, how to find a voice for them, and how to keep your readers hooked through plot and structure.
During the workshop, you will:
Gain an understanding of the genre and sub-genres in the YA market and the multiple approaches to publication
Learn how to create believable and compelling young adult characters by focussing on what matters to your character and using emotion in writing
Learn about the all-important VOICE in YA stories and gain confidence writing their own YA voice
Discover ways to keep readers keen by learning about conflict, plotting and structure.

Karen Foxlee writes for children and grown-ups. Her young adult novels, The Anatomy of Wings and The Midnight Dress were published internationally to much acclaim. Her award-winning children’s novels include Ophelia and the Marvellous Boy, A Most Magical Girl, and Lenny’s Book of Everything which recently won the Children’s Book of the Year Indie Award.
How to Connect to the Live Stream:
When you buy a ticket, you will receive two emails. One will be your receipt from Eventbrite. The other will be an email from Queensland Writers Centre on behalf of Crowdcast, our live stream provider. The latter email will thank you for registering for the course and provide you with a link to the video. A representation of this email is below; the ‘Visit Event’ button will take you to the live stream’s landing page.
It is only through this link in which you may access the live stream, so it is important that you check that you have received it. In case you misplace this email, you will receive another email with the live stream link 10 minutes before the course is scheduled to start. If you don’t revieve the initial email when you buy the ticket, contact us on 07 3842 9922 or at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?
Unless otherwise stated, Queensland Writers Centre workshops and events are suitable for participants aged 16 years and over. If you are under 18 years of age, please check with us for suitability before purchasing a ticket.
Membership will be confirmed on arrival, in the event it isn’t current, membership will need to be arranged.
What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

What can I bring into the event?
You can bring either pen and paper or a laptop along with you to write with. If you do bring a laptop, please remember to bring a power adaptor if necessary.
Will this event be live streamed?
Queensland Writers Centre aims to provide material to its membership regardless of where they reside within Queensland by live streaming some events. Attendees may be broadcast periodically throughout the event as recording takes place. If you wish not to be filmed, let staff know prior to the event.

What’s the refund policy?
If Queensland Writers Centre cancels an event, we will try to reschedule it for a later date. If we cannot reschedule the event, or if you are unable to attend on the amended date, your payment will be refunded in full.
