With A.S. Patric

Analyse the properties of the literary novel so that you may develop your own

Novel Dynamics explores the continuing innovations and transformations of the modern novel and will show how craft evolves into art. This course examines ways the novel can incorporate elements from all genres and modes of expression, yet retain its own integrity and power. We will focus on a practical methodology for developing a literary process and a functional daily practice. Students will develop an agile writing technique through a sequence of exercises and have a firmer understanding of the fundamental principles of storytelling.

Learning Outcomes:

Through practical exercises and higher learning, you will leave this workshop with:

  • A method for developing literary craft and a functional writing process.

  • An understanding of the narrative dynamics that create compelling novels.

  • A better idea of how to develop characters with integrated, integral narratives.

  • Understanding the multilevel structuring of long narratives.

  • Building symbolic and metaphoric systems that sustain long-form narratives.

This is a craft workshop for intermediate to emerging writers. More information on program formats and level definitions can be found here.
