Nick will provide an overview of novella publishing past and present, with a focus on key points of contemporary writing craft that work specifically for novellas. He also examines novella publishing, markets and competitions. Participants will gain novella-writing techniques, and be readier for the marketplace.
Nick will have copies of his Novellas available for purchase after the event and attendees can get their hands on them for $15 each or $70 for the set (cash only).

About Nick Earls
Nick Earls writes long, short and medium-sized fiction, tallying 26 books for adults, teenagers and children. He is the winner of several awards, including a Betty Trask Award (UK) and Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year Award. His novels have appeared on bestseller lists in Australia, the UK and the Amazon Kindle Store; several have been adapted for the stage and screen. As well as one of the Wisdom Tree novellas being selected in Griffith Review’s Novella Project 3, another has been shortlisted for the Christina Stead Prize for Fiction, one won the People’s Choice Award at the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards, and the series as a whole has won gold medals in the Independent Publisher Book Awards and the eLit Awards in the US.
Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?
This course is for participants aged 18 years and above. If you are accessing the QWC member tickets you may be asked to show proof of membership.
What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?
Queensland Writers Centre is located on Level 2 of the State Library of Queensland.
There are several parking and transportation options:
- Parking underneath State Library or Queensland Museum costs $16 per entry.
- There is limited street parking available on Merivale Street, Montague Road and Hope Street at an hourly rate.
- A drop-off point is located on the ring road outside SLQ, next to the bus stops.
- The Cultural Precinct BusWay and South Brisbane Train Station are a short walk from State Library.
What can I bring into the event?
You can bring either pen and paper or a laptop along with you to write with. If you do bring a laptop, please remember to bring a power adaptor if necessary.
The venue runs quite a cool air-conditioning system so we advise bringing a jacket, jumper or cardigan with you.

What’s the refund policy?
If Queensland Writers Centre cancels an event, we will try to reschedule it for a later date. If we cannot reschedule the event, or if you are unable to attend on the amended date, your payment will be refunded in full.
