Pretty Dead Girls: Panel and Book Signing

A conversation on the fetishism of female victims and the limits to empathy. Maguire and Fox, both known for nuance in their writing, discuss the power of narrative in public responses to emotionally fraught events, the pathologising of risk-taking by women, notions of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ victims, and the way a rigid scope of sympathy can distance us from truth.

About the writers

Emily Maguire is the author of five novels and two non-fiction books, a teacher and mentor to emerging writers and an ambassador for the Stella Prize Schools Program. She has twice been named as a Sydney Morning Herald Young Novelist of the Year. Her latest novel, An Isolated Incident, has been shortlisted for the Miles Franklin Award, the Stella Prize, and the ABIA 2017 Literary Fiction Book of the Year.

Andie Fox is a writer and economist. She is a contributing author to several books, including Unbreakable, The Good Mother Myth and Mothers at the Margins. She has written for Daily Life, The Guardian, The Huffington Post, the Wheeler Centre, SBS Comment, Feministe and Meanjin. Fox has also been profiled in Ms Magazine and frequently appears as a guest on ABC Radio.

There will be a bookseller at this event, and Emily and Andie will be able to sign your books after the panel.
