Speculative Worlds with Kylie Chan
Part 1: What is Speculative Fiction? You will learn about the different types of speculative fiction, and where your ideas sit in the vast continuum of imaginary worlds. Kylie will give you insight into the process of building your own world – history, geography, culture and diversity. She will provide you with tools to flesh out your world into a living, immersive landscape that will enthral your readers. She will assist you to develop a system of magic – or science – that adds a fantastic dimension to your creative world.
Part 2: Plot and People. Now that you’ve built your fantastic world, it’s time to place your characters into it and share their adventures. Kylie will give you the tools you need to craft novel, engaging characters, and then help you to send them out to share the adventure. She will help you envisage interactions between your people and the world you have created, and identify ways to underscore conflict and drama. Adding characters – human or otherwise – will give your reader a viewpoint to experience your world in vivid detail.

About Kylie Chan
Kylie Chan wrote the bestselling nine-book Dark Heavens series, a fantasy based on Chinese mythology, and has recently released a new science fiction series published by Harper/Voyager. She holds a degree in IT, an MBA in IT and an MPhil in Creative Writing.
Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?
Unless otherwise stated, QWC workshops and events are suitable for participants aged 16 years and over. If you are under 18 years of age, please check with us for suitability before purchasing a ticket.

What can I bring into the event?
You can bring either pen and paper or a laptop along with you to write with. If you do bring a laptop, please remember to bring a power adaptor if necessary.

What’s the refund policy?
If Queensland Writers Centre cancels an event, we will try to reschedule it for a later date. If we cannot reschedule the event, or if you are unable to attend on the amended date, your payment will be refunded in full.
